In times of budget crisis and core program reductions, one Talbert Middle School student has turned his focus to cuts the community can support. Sixth grader, Jake Laine, has a plan for the district to reduce its environmental footprint and cut down harmful CO2 emissions. He has entered his idea into IC Bus’ America’s Greenest School contest.
Laine is one of 10 finalist with the hope to win the grand prize which includes a IC Bus™ hybrid bus for the district, a $3000 scholarship and $500 in classroom supplies for his class. Voting opened today, March 22nd and will continue through April 1st with voters having the opportunity to vote once a day.
Laine’s ideas include promoting a district shuttle bus system, rewarding students for walking and biking and improving car drop-off and pick-up sites at each campus. These ideas are not just a chance for cost savings, but an opportunity to educate students on the importance of green living. “…We are educating our students and their parents to be more eco-friendly, as well as making a safer environment,” explains Laine.
Laine’s passion for the environment is apparent and his enthusiasm is sure to be contagious. He understands what motivates his peers and knows that a positive approach is the way to go. “Promoting recycling to help pay for our computer lab, having a school clean-up day or having shared transportation not only promotes being green, but also helps us work with each other – which is a lot more fun than complaining.”
And his enthusiasm for positive change has the staff at Talbert Middle School supporting his goals as well. As Talbert Principal Cara Robinson explains, “We are thrilled for Jake. He has taken initiative on his own to make change in his community, and we champion his efforts.”
