PriceMinister.co.uk, one of the fastest growing e-commerce sites in the UK, has today announced the top ten books that have been purchased by UK consumers since February 2009, when the company launched the new British website.

Children’s books are top of the list, with eight of the ten best sellers this year on PriceMinister.co.uk written for children.  Top of the list is the educational Jolly Phonics Workbook, by Sara Wernham, Lib Stephen and Susan M. Lloyd, and published by Jolly Learning Limited.  The Jolly Phonics Workbook supports the reading scheme that many children learn in schools, and its popularity is testament to how keen British parents are to support their children’s education.

In second place, is the eternally popular children’s book by Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar; and third on the list is Pig Gets Stuck by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright.

All of the books in the top ten were purchased cheaper on the PriceMinister.co.uk website than the recommended retail price. In fact, someone buying all of the books in the top ten at PriceMinister would save a total of £20.25 compared to the publishers’ recommended prices.

The top ten books were:

  1. Jolly Phonics Workbook by Sara Wernham, Lib Stephen and Susan M. Lloyd (Jolly Learning Ltd.)
  2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (Puffin)
  3. Pig Gets Stuck by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright (Usborne Books)
  4. Unholy Love by Meg Hutchinson (Hodder & Stoughton)
  5. The Smelly Sprout by Allan Plenderleith (Ravette Publishing Limited)
  6. 100 Carol For Choirs by David Willcocks and John Rutter (Clarendon Press)
  7. Paper Fashions Fantasy by Editors of Klutz (Klutz)
  8. Abigail The Breeze Fairy by Daisy Meadows & Georgie Ripper (Orchard)
  9. Aliens Love Underpants Claire Freedman and Ben Cort (Simon & Schuster Children’s)
  10. My Fairy Glade by Rebecca Finn and Smriti Parasdam (Bloomsbury Publishing)

PriceMinister, a hugely popular e-commerce site, has achieved tremendous success since its launch in 2001. The UK site has almost 3 million discounted books, covering a diverse range of subjects, from alphabet learning to quantum theory, and a variety of styles, from collections of short stories to encyclopaedias. Despite reduced customer spending, the number of unique visitors to the UK site has grown by 1100%.

It was the first website to bring together individuals and professionals who sell and buy new, used or collectable products at fixed prices.  Unlike other internet auctions sites, such as eBay, it also acts as a trusted third party to facilitate the transaction between sellers and buyers. This enables it to guarantee that any transactions are carried out quickly and securely, that the seller is paid, and that the buyer is refunded in the case of defective, damaged or undelivered products.

End.

Notes to Editors:

Launched in France in 2001, and employing over 200 people, PriceMinister is one of the main European online marketplaces.  It ranks second in France, and also operates rapidly growing operations in Spain, Belgium and Switzerland.  Founded by Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet, Pierre Krings, Justin Ziegler, Nathalie Gaveau, and Olivier Mathiot, it has seen three-digit growth since the business started, and is aiming to be in the top five UK sites by the end of 2010.
