The 5:15 p.m. program lightens up a bit with Abariza, the short film from director Elena Dimitrakopoulou, in which an elderly couple plans their grand escape from a senior home. Writer/director Pete Stamatelatos and director Scott Ackerlund’s award-winning short film Sun Don’t Shine for Us will launch the 3:30 p.m. program with its Los Angeles premiere in which a Greek immigrant mother’s hopes and dreams for her family collapse when her son enters the world of drug addiction. The moving, bitter-sweet documentary feature from director Tony Asimakopoulos comes after the short. The only son of Greek-Canadian immigrants who faces his complicated relationship with his overbearing mother and ailing father, and the patterns of dysfunction they share, in Fortunate Son.

Closing night festivities launch with a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m., during which film buffs will undoubtedly be buzzing about the festival lineup. Kicking off the closing night program with a very strong Japanese connection, at 6:30 p.m., is the U.S. premiere of the animated short film from director Panagiotis Rappas, Fountain of Youth, a tale of an elderly woodcutter who stumbles upon the fountain of youth in a mountain forest of Japan. After 35 years of living in Crete, happily married to a Greek sailor and raising her two sons, Sayome hears news of her mother’s death and returns to her native Japan to reunite with her estranged family.

CATANIA, Italy – “Catholicism as a Corrupting Factor” (ISBN 146801014X) by Francesco Belfiore explains how Catholicism affects negatively the behavior of individuals and the habit of society.
Belfiore’s book focuses on several critical issues such as papal infallibility, believing in miracles, formal recognition of rules (on sexual behavior) that are regularly violated, easy forgiveness, alienation of women, the cult of Saints as “protectors”, pursuing pseudo-values such as chastity, the tendency to interfere with the political activity, etc. As a result, the author outlines the typical “Catholic behavioral model”.

The author doesn’t discuss any doctrinal aspects (which would interest a tiny percentage of Catholics). His interest is in describing how the mass of Catholics perceives certain topics and how reacts to them.

Although his book does have a critical edge, the author says it doesn’t contain any offensive remarks about Catholicism. He even underlines passages that show the good in the religion, and expresses the hope that the reading of his book “may serve as a stimulus for reflection that leads to a conception of Catholicism free from negative influences.”

In the last chapter of his book, Belfiore questions “Why Religion?” and brings up the idea that most people are unable to attain a rational, philosophical conception of the world and a somehow justified moral standard, which are insuppressible aspiration of the human soul. Hence, they resort to a religious doctrine, which provides them with a worldview and a set of dogmatic moral principles, thus fulfilling their moral needs. For this reason, Belfiore says, “Despite the negative effects of religion, all people of the world in all times have professed some form of religion and have believed in the dogmatic truths that all forms of religion impose to their followers.” Religion, Belfiore says, may be regarded as a “romanticized
philosophy of the masses.”
