The program was begun in 2009. While The Bright Path Ishayas had previously done volunteer work within susceptible communities, this marked the first time that the lessons would be provided to members of a country as a whole.

“In the past, we’ve done work within the prison system, both in the United States and Mexico,” says a representative of The Bright Path Ishayas. “People within the prison system obviously need assistance with reaching inner peace. But we began to wonder if people living in a difficult economy might also need assistance.”

There’s no question that people in Cuba live under extremely dire economic circumstances. The ongoing political struggle, along with intolerant governmental policies, has placed a severe amount of strain on people both inside and outside of the country.

For the past 42 years, NYCHA Talent Shows have been delighting audiences and launching the careers of up-and-coming performers who reside in public housing. Auditions of over one hundred performers are held in each borough. The fashion show will feature contemporary Chinese and Chinese-American fashion designers, as well as traditional and historical Chinese costumes. The FCC teens, with help from students from the Chinese Students Association at the University of Rochester, are working on logistics and will model the clothes at the event.

The goal of the event is to raise money for educational and vocational opportunities for teenage orphans who are approaching an age where they will be turned out of institutional care and have to fend for themselves. Sassy Scrubs spearheads its own efforts for this same worthy cause through their Orphan Hope Market store. Sassy Scrubs Owner, Karen Bradley states, “We do our best to provide support to China’s orphans and supporting educational and vocational programs helps to insure a bright future for these children.”

Year of the Dragon Fashion Show Featuring Sassy Scrubs

Teenagers living in Chinese orphanages, or Social Welfare Institutes (SWIs), must often leave their institutions at only 16-18 years of age. They face a bleak future, trying to make their way with no family support and minimal education or work skills. The teens from FCC-Rochester are determined to help as they can. FCC Rochester is a non-profit (501(c) (3)) organization of adoptive families in upstate New York. Most of the FCC teenagers were adopted from China as little ones and feel compassion for their orphanage mates who had to remain behind. The fashion show event will benefit Half the Sky’s Million Rainbows program, which offers mentoring and educational assistance and vocational training to older orphans living in China’s SWIs, to contribute the funds they raise.

The girls in the FCC-Rochester Teen Group want to showcase Chinese heritage and have turned to the many famous Chinese-American fashion designers to help with runway apparel and donations of accessories for raffle items. “We’re even featuring some C-Pop music on the runway and will have Chinese fashions and merchandise for sale in the lobby of the theatre,” explained Anna Lazeski, a 16-year-old who has been working on the show since the summer with her friends.

The group will be featuring Sassy Scrubs’ kid’s scrubs during the fashion show. They have also received donations and loans of apparel from many generous designers, such as Vera Wang, Suzy Chin Maggy Boutique, Joseph Altuzarra, Kathrine Kwei, Red Thread Designs of Toronto, and Kim’s Fashions in Boston. Kohl’s has generously agreed to let the group model six ensembles from their Simply Vera ready-to-wear line. One Enchanted Evening is lending them Christina Wu bridal designs, and the Country Ewe in Canandaigua, NY is loaning the group Samuel Dong, Clara Sun Woo, and Grace Chuang fashions. Many of the Teen Group members waited in a line outside of a local Target store (in the 30-degree weather) starting at 6:00 a.m. in order to add Jason Wu to the list of featured celebrity designers!

The Mission in Citrus Homeless Shelters proudly presented Walmart, and Inverness
Florida Manager Larry Gamble, the new Commitment to Veteran’s Award. It includes
both a POW – MIA, and American Flag. It represents all branches of the military,
and includes the Cross to honor all those who gave their lives to protect our
freedoms.

As one of the largest private employers of veterans,
Walmart has recognized and supports those who have served our country. Their

shelter is now in its third year. It is operated by formerly and presently
homeless Veterans. There are no paid staff members. It is a miracle in
itself.

In September 2009, the Help for Heroes Shop launched their first hoody. San Diego and Imperial Valley Regional Forum to Focus on Developing Catalytic Strategies
Opinion leaders and policy makers from across region join forces to set legislative priorities.

What: The California Stewardship Network and California Forward will host the San Diego and Imperial Valley Regional Forum with local business organizations to help set priorities for a state action plan promoting job growth and competitiveness in the region. More than 150 participants are expected. The forum is one of 12 being convened around California that will help to inform the first-ever California Economic Summit scheduled for May 11, 2012.

Participants will have the opportunity to assess specific state actions that were drawn from three key reports. They will be asked during the event to electronically rank in order how supportive they are of regional priorities in areas such as workforce, infrastructure, innovation, and regulatory process. Participants will also have the opportunity to submit their own recommendations for state action in support of regional priorities in these and other areas.

Warm Baby Blankets Make a Critical Difference in the Lives of Chinese Orphans

In a partnership between CCAI and China’s governmental division overseeing adoptions, the China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption (CCCWA), Karen’s Blankets for Babies Project was accepted as an Official Project in 2007. The Chinese name for this project is “ai xin xiao mian tan” and roughly translates to “Little Blanket of Love”, an apt name for this project of the heart.

In addition to spending weekends in her sewing room, Karen has enlisted workers at her company, Sassy Scrubs, a United States based manufacturer of custom made hospital uniforms, to sew baby blankets in their spare time. Her efforts caught the attention of Colorado adoption agency, CCAI, and the officials at China’s CCCWA.Top of Form

Karen has already sent over 7,000 blankets to Chinese orphanages through her volunteer Blankets for Babies Project. Along with the generous donation of time and resources from Karen, donations of blankets and cash assistance have been received from people and groups throughout the United States, such as Girl Scout troops, church groups, and individual families. One young girl used her recent slumber party as a ‘baby blanket making party’ and shipped Karen dozens of blankets to be sent to orphans in China. This newest shipment of blankets to an orphanage in the NanYang province will allow Karen and her supporters to continue to assist the waiting and foster children of China’s orphanages.

The costs of coal and fuel can be prohibitively high during the cold winter months in many areas of China. Babies and small children in orphanages suffer from the cold temperatures, wearing hats and mittens inside the orphanage building and sleeping zipped up in winter coats. “During severe winter weather”, states Karen, “frostbite becomes a real and serious problem.” It is for this reason that Karen’s project becomes even more important during the winter months. “It becomes more than the comfort of a soft blanket”, says Karen “it also can mean preventing the loss of fingers and toes through frostbite for the smallest babies.”

The Project needs your help! Since it costs nearly $100 for every box of 60 blankets mailed from New York to China, funds are needed to get these warm blankets into the hands of China’s waiting children. Karen is working on negotiating a reduced fee through FedEx and airlines, but it is expected that costs will still be high. Any funds not used for the shipping costs will help Karen purchase more warm and soft fabric, for more blankets.
