Warm Baby Blankets Make a Critical Difference in the Lives of Chinese Orphans

In a partnership between CCAI and China’s governmental division overseeing adoptions, the China Center for Children’s Welfare and Adoption (CCCWA), Karen’s Blankets for Babies Project was accepted as an Official Project in 2007. The Chinese name for this project is “ai xin xiao mian tan” and roughly translates to “Little Blanket of Love”, an apt name for this project of the heart.

In addition to spending weekends in her sewing room, Karen has enlisted workers at her company, Sassy Scrubs, a United States based manufacturer of custom made hospital uniforms, to sew baby blankets in their spare time. Her efforts caught the attention of Colorado adoption agency, CCAI, and the officials at China’s CCCWA.Top of Form

Karen has already sent over 7,000 blankets to Chinese orphanages through her volunteer Blankets for Babies Project. Along with the generous donation of time and resources from Karen, donations of blankets and cash assistance have been received from people and groups throughout the United States, such as Girl Scout troops, church groups, and individual families. One young girl used her recent slumber party as a ‘baby blanket making party’ and shipped Karen dozens of blankets to be sent to orphans in China. This newest shipment of blankets to an orphanage in the NanYang province will allow Karen and her supporters to continue to assist the waiting and foster children of China’s orphanages.

The costs of coal and fuel can be prohibitively high during the cold winter months in many areas of China. Babies and small children in orphanages suffer from the cold temperatures, wearing hats and mittens inside the orphanage building and sleeping zipped up in winter coats. “During severe winter weather”, states Karen, “frostbite becomes a real and serious problem.” It is for this reason that Karen’s project becomes even more important during the winter months. “It becomes more than the comfort of a soft blanket”, says Karen “it also can mean preventing the loss of fingers and toes through frostbite for the smallest babies.”

The Project needs your help! Since it costs nearly $100 for every box of 60 blankets mailed from New York to China, funds are needed to get these warm blankets into the hands of China’s waiting children. Karen is working on negotiating a reduced fee through FedEx and airlines, but it is expected that costs will still be high. Any funds not used for the shipping costs will help Karen purchase more warm and soft fabric, for more blankets.

The special guest is Joshua Bolten, Vice Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and former White House Chief of Staff, who will speak about the implications of the Holocaust in confronting hate, anti-Semitism and injustice for law enforcement and other professions. Sassy Scrubs Remembers

When medics on the front lines serve in areas such as the Middle East, they have limited access to supplies; particularly, new medical uniforms. In preparation for Urban Ronin’s fourth anniversary, the group will focus on retooling its training curriculum, recruiting new members (the goal is to double the current numbers), and fundraising to create epic shows. All of this leading to the ultimate goal of generating more show bookings.

“This year we will be expanding our involvement in the events that we have worked previously. Our longer term goal is to become a one-stop entertainment resource for convention and party planners and next season we will take additional baby steps towards that larger goal,” said Louis Rosas-Guyon, President of Historic Entertainment®, parent company of Urban Ronin.

The 2011 show season was a success and truly set the groundwork for the group to achieve new heights come 2012. After advancing every single member into the weapons courses (everyone starts with the unarmed course), the group was able to focus on developing members’ acting skills, costume making skills, as well as general theatre professionalism.

Next year will prove to be Urban Ronin’s busiest, considering that the group has already been booked for twice as many performances as any year before. To meet the rising demand for relatively free shows, the group is revamping its fundraising efforts. Through small performances, raffle ticket sales, and garnering donations, the group hopes to buy new weapons (blunted and safe), help members purchase or create costumes, and continue stocking the first aid kit. Urban Ronin is extremely safety-minded and a registered nurse attends every practice.

In terms of recruitment, the group will continue to allow everyone their first practice free. Urban Ronin directs most of its efforts toward anime conventions and receives warm responses; however, due to the sheer physicality of stunt combat, only one new member for every seven people who try a free practice returns for more. The training is flexible, but intense. Within one to two years, members can learn several weapon masteries which is quite a fast pace. The group strives to develop trainers from within its own ranks and, this year, several key members will be taking on official assistant trainer roles, meaning there is also room for advancement.

President Rosas-Guyon said, “In our three short years we have built a core of members that serve as the foundation for future growth.”

As with any group focusing on creative pursuits, Urban Ronin has had an emotional past. Group members consider themselves “a wonderfully dysfunctional family” thanks to the bonding they’ve experienced through the training and performances with Urban Ronin. New members can expect to learn everyone’s name by the first day whether it is through a game of Koosh, practicing punches in tai-chi, or the rounds of calisthenics. Members range from age 15 to their late 40s, while older members mostly enjoy the fresh air and exercise, the younger members are learning discipline and cooperation. Many members come to view Urban Ronin practices as an alternative way to stay in shape and a great way to make friends.

– On Saturday, September 24, 2011, the Lakeville Friends of the Environment LLC
and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota will host their 3rd Annual Pedal the
Parks event at Pioneer Park Plaza in downtown Lakeville. This year there will be a Sustainability Fair featuring local vendors specializing in sustainable goods and services. The event will start with speakers from the city of Lakeville,
and Alan Downs from Minnesota Bike Alliance will address bike safety. After
speakers and a bike safety check by Valley Bike and Ski, participants will be
led on a 6, 10 or 20 mile bike ride from Pioneer Park Plaza. The goal for the
event is to show families that they can safely bike to their local parks,
businesses and Farmers’ Market to save money and gas, burn calories, and enjoy
some great outdoor recreation.

We will also acknowledge 350.org for their efforts to reduce the world’s carbon footprint. We will take a group photo to put on their website. This event will commemorate Lakeville’s contribution to 350.org’s Moving Planet, a day set aside to
celebrate both local and worldwide efforts to find climate solutions. Plans are
being made for a carpool down to the capital grounds after the event to join
others at the statewide party.

Lakeville Friends of the Environment was started as a group dedicated to preserving our environment in 2007. As an active group of concerned citizens, they meet once a month to plan activities. Twice a year, they initiate clean up of North Creek in

Project Ladybug was established by former star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Dina Manzo, to enrich the lives of children suffering from life-threatening conditions. The fund strives to help families face the financial and emotional hardships during their children’s treatment in the hospital. Through improving the quality of life for these children and families, Project Ladybug hopes to improve outcomes for these young patients.
