The documentary photography of the Englishman Roger Fenton in the Crimean War and of Matthew Brady and his team of photographers during the U.S. Civil War were among the earliest attempts to record historical events photographically. Although photographs became a staple in the press and newspapers increased their circulation with special Sunday supplements printed in rotogravure, which produced a more finely detailed pictures the shots, by and large, were posed and static. Photographers were barred from the battlefields of World War I, and few civilians saw an illustration of the real war. In the mid-1920s, small handheld cameras, such as the 33-mm Leica, became available for the first time. Many were equipped with lenses that used available light to take shots at incredibly short exposures. Armed with such cameras, and with the new fast films that were developed in the following years, photographers were no longer confined to relatively unmoving subjects, and their cameras could be used almost as a third eye. It thus became possible for a photographer to be a reporter as well, to tell a story so convincingly in pictures that a textual narrative was no longer essential and words need be used only to identify people and places.

Illustrated periodicals sprang up throughout Europe in the 1920s, hiring photographers many of whom soon became famous for their skill, their daring, and their ability to recognize a good story almost before it happened. These included Erich Salomon, Felix Man, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Stefan Lorant, and AndrKertsz. In the 1930s many went to the United States, and in the mid-1930s the best joined the newly founded picture magazines Life and Look. The sophistication of the medium was demonstrated decisively during the Spanish Civil War by two innovative photographers whose cameras probed beyond the immediate action: the Hungarian Robert Capa and the Frenchman Henri Cartier-Bresson. Both were to become world famous, Capa as one of the most important memorialists of the wars that followed, Cartier-Bresson as the discoverer of “the decisive moment” in his immortal photographs of ordinary people.

Commissioned by the U.S. Farm Security Administration during the 1930s, Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange recorded the devastation brought by drought and depression to the lives of American farm families. Both Lange and Margaret Bourke-White worked for Life, perfecting the photographic news essay, which became a specialty of the magazine. The potential of photography for journalists, simultaneously to record, to dramatize, to expose, and to propagandize was most fully realized in World War II. The Americans Bourke-White, W. Eugene Smith, Larry Burrows, and David Douglas Duncan all continued the tradition, begun by Capa and his colleagues, of integrating a personal vision with dramatic action photographs, artistic techniques that would also characterize coverage of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. In fact, photographs of the shooting of a handcuffed Viet Cong captive (by Eddie Adams) and of a nine-year-old girl running from a napalm attack (by Nick Ut) were said to influence public opinion about the morality of the Vietnam War.

Since the days of Jacob Riis, many photographers had involved themselves in documenting social and economic ills. After World War II, and especially in the strife-torn years of the 1960s and ’70s, social photography became a major concern of photojournalists, who wanted “to form the image of our generation,” in the words of Werner Bischoff, a famous colleague of Capa’s. Many of these artists benefited from the International Fund for Concerned Photography, founded by Robert Capa’s brother, photographer Cornell Capa. The need to deal with social and political issues photographically, not only those in the United States but in other countries experiencing the anguish of war or poverty, continues in the work of such contemporary photojournalists as the Briton Donald McCullin, the Brazilian Sebasti„o Salgado, and the Americans Susan Meiselas and Milton Rogovin.

The end of the era of the great picture magazines and the expansion of television as the main source of news coverage, have left photojournalism with a much smaller audience. Rather than compete with television, the photojournalist looks for subjects of social concern or covers major stories with warmth and intimacy, and from a personal perspective and qualities that television news photography rarely exhibits.
