Kahler’s disease is the second most frequent occurring form of blood cancer. It affects white blood cells and leads to death, mostly within 3-4 years. Treatment is possible with modern chemotherapy (e.g. bortezomib, thalidomide, etc.), but side effects such as nerve damage and nerve pain occur very frequent (about 80%). Due to the side effect of nerve damage, it is not possible to provide patients with optimal treatment as the chemotherapy needs to be stopped or the dose has to be reduced in order to prevent further damage. Therefore patients cannot finish the full course of chemotherapy and by that they run a higher risk for recurrence of the cancer.

For years, researchers have been searching for compounds to protect the nerve functions during chemotherapy treatments, so that patients suffering from blood cancer can continue and finish their treatment and have higher survival changes.

The study results from a clinical trial in 20 patients with blood cancer (presented on 10 January 2012) showed that Palmitoylethanolamide (Normast), a natural occurring compound, can protect nerves and can decrease pain during a chemotherapy treatment.

The researchers treated blood cancer patients by adding Palmitoylethanolamide (Normast) to the chemotherapy. They found that nerve functions did not further deteriorate, but started to improve. Next to that, the (nerve) pain (an often occurring side effect during chemotherapy treatment) was significantly reduced.

These are very interesting and important results, as this is the first study that shows that protection of nerve functions during chemotherapy treatment is possible and also safe. The chance of developing successful, safe and effective treatments for patients with this form of blood cancer is strongly increased by these results.
