Free Press Release Distribution Roundup – 2023 Update

Does Free Press Release Distribution Actually Work?

I get asked all the time if I can I provide a list of free press release submission companies. Despite being antithetical to my press release distribution business, which relies on reaching media directly the way that actually works and creates results for our clients, by email and dedicated newswire feeds to newsrooms nationwide, I thought it would be worth venturing into this murky world to give you a comprehensive list of online press release services that offer free press releases.

A Huge Word of Caution – Free Press Release Distribution Services Produce Almost Zero Results

I caution you to use any of the so-called free press release distribution services at your own risk and to realize that a free press release is not a mechanism of public relations or PR, but an offshoot of search engine optimization (SEO) — with no proven track record of actually improving a website’s SEO.

Warning – Check out the following links regarding the pitfalls of free press release websites:

In fact, getting real earned media is the only way to get lasting SEO benefit from press releases, which you cannot do with free press release sites.

Criteria: When developing this list, I looked at several variables, such as: Alexa ranking, Page Rank, credibility indicators, and style. Sites that didn’t make the rank included: simple blogs, industry specific press release distribution sites, dead sites (no recent press releases), and sites with broken navigation or ordering systems.

Help Us Keep This List Up to Date

A trend I’ve noticed is that many past free press release websites are no longer free (but let you set up a free account to then pay). If you find any of these sites no longer offer free press release distribution, let us know by commenting below.

Thanks Ryan. Great addition!

I don’t see http://www.pr-inside.com/ on this list. It’s one I use all the time and stories are immediately picked up by Google. I am not so sure that reporters read these releases, but it certainly helps our SEO.

Reply

Thanks for this great resource. While Caribbeanpressreleases.com is a non US site and only a few years old, it is a free press release distribution site geared specifically for Caribbean businesses and audiences.

Reply

Thanks Marti. I’m going to add PR-inside.com to the list.

Sharon, as noted in criteria, I’m going to stick with free press release sites that handle all types of press releases. I discovered industrial free press release sites, travel free press release distribution services, and ones that were geographically-centric so I decided it was best to try to keep the list as broad as possible. Ideally, these sites will be useful across all industries and at least for U.S. businesses.

Best,

Mickie Kennedy

also any list about Indian PR website like this?

Another online press release distribution service is:

PressFlow.co.uk [Editor: not free so not included above]

For Mayank Patel. A popular site that provides free releases for India:

http://www.merinews.com/

Sites that are on the list that now charge:

http://express-press-release.net/ Price $29 per press release
http://www.pressmediawire.com Require payment, see below

http://www.pressmediawire.com/press-release-service-pricing.cfm

http://www.pitchengine.com They require you to provide a credit card!
http://www.pr9.net/ Slowed way down. I think they register for free, but charge for submission?

Sites that have slowed way down:

http://www.prfocus.com Good luck, if you can navigate out of the pop up ads!!
http://www.exactrelease.com Not much action on this site!

These free sites are okay for temporary Internet Visibility and to establish branding, but don’t expect much traffic, and an even less chance you’ll get contacted by a media source!

Reply

I Agree with this. Most of this are paid.

Great resource! Thanks for putting together this list.

Reply

we wish to get our site reviewed and possibly to be included in the list. thepressrelease.org is the site.

Reply

No problem Mickie!

That’s the best top 10 list I’ve come across yet.

Additionally, I’d like to add that these free sites also lack any real SEO benefits. Such as helping establish high quality back links or having a positive effect on your website’s key metrics.

However, they can be good tools to use to practice your press release writing skills, and to learn the proper way to format them. Providing you have a lot of time and patience!

Reply

Thanks Steven, I’ve updated the list and removed express-press-release.net and pressmediawire.com, which now appear to be charging.

Hi Mickie, seoPRwire is also a free press release distribution site that is thriving. Since its launch in August 2009, we have improved and worked hard on our SEO and now stands at Google Page Rank 3. Another great resource for small business world wide. Thanks and you can also add it on your list.

We are currently using pressmediawire.com. They offer unlimited press release distributions for $1200 first year and $720 (40%) each year after http://www.pressmediawire.com/authorsignup.cfm I think it is a good deal. We also use seoprwire for free press release distribution. it is PR 3 and provides great results in searches.

Hi, Will a press release really help to improve the page rank of the website?

If yes, how? Please let me know. I will be grateful…..

Reply

Personally, I don’t think press releases help the page rank of a website. They might result in a bump in traffic as they themselves (the press releases) will get search engine traffic but Google has made it clear it doesn’t to reward the page rank of sites because of press release campaigns.

I think press releases are powerful when sent to the media. Most online press release sites, including free and low cost providers, are a distraction and you are NOT reaching the media through them.

Try a service like eReleases that reaches the media and distributes over PR Newswire, the oldest and largest newswire of press releases.

Best,

Mickie

Distribution of press releases in the media is the flagship and the first opportunity of the platform PIAR.IM for do-it-yourself project promotion on the Internet PR.im. In the future, there will be opportunities for mass mailing of announcements on bulletin boards, registration in all business directories, mailing of vacancies and resumes on job sites, etc.
