We are a group of like-minded people from all over the globe who organise fund-raising initiatives to help people torn by war, famine and other perils. This time, our endeavours are leading us on a road trip from Dubai, UAE to the United Kingdome using a motorcycles ridden by a solo rider.

It is all about the challenges, about being different and exploring the boundaries of what’s possible. The Goodwill Journey series takes these ideals to the next level and features some of the toughest challenges. This year, the focus is on rehabilitating physically challenged children in Gaza. They are planning to spread the awareness and raise the funds to build a dedicated school for them, ensuring they have the right equipment, facilities and resources. This edition of the Goodwill Journey is taking them on a road trip from Dubai to London on a motorbike starting in the first week of June 2010.

We will travel 40,000 km across the Middle East and Europe, touching base in 36 major capitals over a period of 59 days en route to the UK with the hope to raise a million dollars. Hope and Play abhor the denial of human rights from children of all national, ethnic or religious origin. We especially abhor these when man-made, such as through acts of physical or psychological violence. In Gaza, the Israeli government’s actions of occupation, blockade, and the full military assault of December 2008 and January 2009 without due attention to protecting civilians has left the local population facing a humanitarian crisis. As a result of these actions, Gaza’s children have been subjected to the following:

•           Child deaths, with over 400 to date.

•           Children traumatised because of the incessant bombardment and because of the horrific sights they are subjected to in terms of death, mutilation and dismemberment;

•           Child injuries, including as a direct or indirect result of bombardment and of the Israeli army’s use of phosphorous;

•           Displacement, as homes are destroyed;

•           Deaths of relatives, making many children orphans;

•           Unnecessary deaths due to lack of medication for sick children;

•           Destruction of the education infrastructure, including schools, colleges, universities and the ministry of education;

•           Creation of a sense of hopelessness as children see that their parents are unable to defend them, and that wherever and whatever they do, there is no escape from Israel’s bombardments;

•           Increased infant mortality as mothers are unable to get to hospitals for delivery.

This comes following the Israeli and Egyptian blockades of Gaza, which are still ongoing and are preventing the entry of essential supplies into Gaza.
